Ravichandran Ashwin has offered a unique perspective on Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) retention strategy ahead of the mega auction, suggesting that MS Dhoni should be retained as a capped player rather than as an uncapped player.

R Ashwin has given a blockbuster comment on MS Dhoni and said that he would retain the former Chennai Super Kings captain as a capped player. CSK can retain Dhoni as an uncapped player. The franchise will have to pay him a sum of Rs 4 crore if he is retained in the uncapped category.

The IPL Governing Council's decision to bring back the rule that Indian players who've not played internationally for five or more years can be retained as ‘uncapped' provided CSK a route to retain five-time IPL-winning captain Dhoni for just Rs 4 crore.

Uncapped rule not made just with MS Dhoni and CSK in mind – IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal rubbishes such theories, saying several players fall under the category.
