The Montreal Canadiens have ridden outstanding goaltending to a fast start this season. Certainly it is early returns, but Samuel Montembeault has been the best goalie in the league in the first week.

Lars Eller scored two goals and Kevin Hayes notched the game-winner in the third period, as the Penguins defeated the Canadiens, 6-3. Rickard Rakell and Kris Letang also scored for Pittsburgh, and Evgeni Malkin added the empty-netter to seal the win at the end.

Rickard Rakell doubled the lead just under 10 minutes later, but a late first-period goal from the Canadiens' Kaiden Guhle beat Tristan Jarry to cut the Penguins' lead in half. Montreal tied the game in the second period off a power-play goal from Juraj Slafkovsky, and gained the lead later in the frame from a goal from Emil Heineman.
