The European Union called for "respect" for the court ruling. Although the law was adopted and penal code amended, they risk being referred to the RS Constitutional Court.The case has been widely seen as a test of the divided nation's weak central government after the 65-year old RS president was accused of flouting the country's peace deal.

Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik has been sentenced to one year in prison and banned from holding public office for six years. The Sarajevo court announced that the sentence means Dodik will be unable to serve as the President of Republika Srpska for six years once the ruling becomes final.

The landmark ruling came after a year-long trial against Dodik on charges that he disobeyed the top international envoy overseeing peace in the Balkan country
