The Karen Read murder trial incurred over $258,000 in security costs for Massachusetts State Police, highlighting the financial impact of high-profile court cases.

The State Police security involved uniformed troopers monitoring the crowds of pink-clad demonstrators who came out in support of Read, as well as counter protestors. They also directed traffic, and patrolled the outside of the courthouse.

Prosecutors have asked Massachusetts’ highest court to allow them to retry Karen Read for the murder of her Boston police officer boyfriend.

The ACLU has jumped into the Karen Read Supreme Judicial Court fight on the side of the accused murderer. The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts filed a brief in Read’s appeal to Massachusetts’ highest court to have two of the three charges against her — including second-degree murder — dropped in her second trial scheduled for January.
