BOSTON - Comet Atlas has been flirting with Massachusetts. It began very low in the eastern horizon a few weeks ago and now it has reappeared in the west in the evenings. However, until now, there really hasn't been an ideal night for viewing here in the Northeast.

To view the comet, look towards the western night sky 45 minutes after the sun sets. If you locate Venus, which is the brightest planet in the sky, the comet is located to the right and slightly up. Every night, the comet will become more faint and appear higher in the sky until it is no longer visible.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is the brightest comet in 13 years, visible to the naked eye. Since Oct. 11, observers in the Northern Hemisphere have reported seeing it without a telescope.

The best chance to see this rare comet is about 45-minutes to 1-hour after sunset looking west and staying away from the city lights. As time progresses, visibility to the naked eye will run out. So, using a camera, binoculars or even a small telescope will be the better option.

Astronomers infer the Oort Cloud is there because it’s the only logical explanation for the arrival of a certain class of comets that sporadically visit our solar system. The cloud, it turns out, is basically a gigantic reservoir that may hold billions of icy celestial bodies.

This week, it's all about the full “Hunter’s Supermoon.” However, there are a few other notable celestial sights to see — not least the possibility of a view of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, an occultation (eclipse) of Saturn and a view of the moon close to the beautiful Pleiades star cluster.

It isn't often that we get the chance to see a comet with our own eyes- but on Saturday, some folks in Maine got the chance to do just that!

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS has been slightly visible during the early mornings for a couple of weeks now, but it took binoculars to see it. Now it is putting on a much bigger show in the western sky just after sunset.

After watching the Northern Lights earlier this week and the Solar Eclipse in April, another exciting weather phenomena is possible in the night sky through late October. The C/2023-A3 comet can be seen soaring across the Northern Hemisphere through the end of the month.
