One week after Hurricane Milton hit, Hillsborough County schools are set to be the final ones in Florida to resume classes. Hillsborough officials had looked into to reopen sooner, but persistent power outages in some locations kept the district from getting back on track.

As Hurricane Milton rushed ashore last Wednesday at least 2,000 Floridians found safe haven at Babcock Ranch, a community the size of Manhattan that opened in 2018 to withstand climate-driven storms.

"Conditions are much improved compared to this time last week, when retailers struggled to keep their gas pumps stocked, due to spike in demand from Hurricane Milton," spokesperson Mark Jenkins said.

According to AAA - The Auto Club Group, the state’s average gas price is down one cent from last week, five cents from last month, and 16 cents lower than at this time in 2023.
