Richard Hatt, 57, who is accused of killing Stephen Killam, 47, of Fairfield on Tuesday morning, appeared by video Wednesday at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.

Stephen Killam, 47, of Fairfield was found dead in the parking lot near a rehabilitation facility in Waterville on Tuesday morning.

Authorities were called to the parking lot of the Mount Joseph at Waterville nursing facility around 6:30 in the morning.

Authorities were investigating a shooting on Highwood Street that sent students in Waterville, Oakland and Fairfield into lockout precautions Tuesday morning.

Authorities say the victim was fatally shot in a car that was parked outside a nursing home, and that the suspect has been taken into custody.
