Remains found on Mount Everest may have belonged to the British climber Andrew Comyn “Sandy” Irvine, who disappeared along with George Mallory in 1924.

When a National Geographic documentary team discovered a boot and sock sticking out of a melting glacier on Mount Everest in September, they almost immediately recognized its significance as a clue to solve a century-old mystery.

Andrew Irvine went missing in 1924 alongside climbing partner George Mallory as the pair attempted to be the first to reach Everest's summit.

In his final letter to his wife, Ruth, before he vanished on Mount Everest a century ago, the 37-year-old Mallory, who once famously said he wanted to conquer Everest "because it's there," tried to ease her worries even as he said his chances of reaching the world's highest peak were "50 to 1 against us."
