In a defeat for the Trump administration, a federal judge in New York ruled Wednesday that companies that paid tariffs struck down last month by Supreme Court are due refunds.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s tax relief plan could benefit tens of millions of middle-class workers, with a focus on those making at or below a living wage.
The U.S. government must also reimburse businesses for the interest they paid on tariffs recently struck down by the Supreme Court, according to the Cato Institute.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also predicted that overall tariff rates, which fell after a Supreme Court ruling last month, would be back to previous levels within five months.
"When our Olympians bring home the gold, they shouldn’t be punished with a burdensome bill," a backer of the plan says.
