In comments published Monday by AL.com, Riley said he received a call Sunday night from a pair of NCAA officials, including Dan Gavitt, who oversees the NIT as well as the NCAA basketball tournaments.

The NIT called South Alabama's invitation "premature" and apologized for the confusion in a statement written by Gavitt and released Monday. But that didn't ease Riley's indignation.
