BOSTON - Comet Atlas has been flirting with Massachusetts. It began very low in the eastern horizon a few weeks ago and now it has reappeared in the west in the evenings. However, until now, there really hasn't been an ideal night for viewing here in the Northeast.
Rare comet visible through the week
To view the comet, look towards the western night sky 45 minutes after the sun sets. If you locate Venus, which is the brightest planet in the sky, the comet is located to the right and slightly up. Every night, the comet will become more faint and appear higher in the sky until it is no longer visible.
Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet visible this week
Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is the brightest comet in 13 years, visible to the naked eye. Since Oct. 11, observers in the Northern Hemisphere have reported seeing it without a telescope.
Once-in-a-lifetime comet visible this week
The best chance to see this rare comet is about 45-minutes to 1-hour after sunset looking west and staying away from the city lights. As time progresses, visibility to the naked eye will run out. So, using a camera, binoculars or even a small telescope will be the better option.
