At 11 a.m. on Oct. 5, the National Hurricane Center began advisories on Tropical Depression 14. This would continue organizing and become Tropical Storm Milton 145 minutes later. This storm intensified at an unprecedented rate.

Milton’s tornadoes were part of an unusual trend this year: Hurricanes in the U.S. have produced an abnormally high number of strong twisters. The tornado outbreak that Hurricane Milton spawned in Florida was a leading cause of death and damage from the storm.
