Zuko did improve quite significantly a comic later when he was able to fly with his feet only despite enduring the circumstances of cold environment and holding a grown man.

Zuko's seems to have the stronger fire bending, and is a warrior himself, plus he has more feats to fall back on. He's also insanely skilled with his blades.
