Halloween traces its origins to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated over 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland and parts of the UK. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a time when Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead blurred. To ward off roaming spirits, people lit bonfires and wore costumes. When Christianity spread, All Hallows’ Eve emerged on October 31, preceding All Saints’ Day on November 1. Over time, the traditi

Caerlaverock Castle stands near the Solway Firth in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It was built in the late thirteenth century by the Maxwell family, replacing an earlier nearby fort. Unusual for Britain, the castle has a triangular design, strong curtain walls, corner towers, and a wide moat. In 1300 it was famously besieged by King Edward I of England during the Wars of Scottish Independence, an event recorded in a contemporary poem. Although captured, the castle was rebuilt and remained an

In about 1785–1790, Thomas Kennedy of Dunure commissioned renowned architect Robert Adam to build a new, classical-style castle nearby. It featured a symmetrical design and a dramatic central spiral staircase inspired by Adam’s work at C

Carnasserie Castle stands above Kilmartin Glen in Argyll, overlooking one of Scotland’s richest prehistoric landscapes. It was begun around 1565 for John Carswell, Bishop of the Isles and a leading figure of the Scottish Reformation, who intended a comfortable Renaissance style residence rather than a purely defensive fortress. The tall tower house was only partly completed, likely halted by political turmoil and Carswell’s declining fortunes. In 1685, during Argyll’s Rising against James VII, g
